Most human studies of CBD have been done on people who have seizures, and the FDA recently approved the first CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, for rare forms of epilepsy. Clinical trials for other conditions are promising, but tiny. In one Brazilian study published in 2011 of people with generalized social anxiety disorder, for example, taking a 600-mg dose of CBD (higher than a typical dose from a tincture) lessened discomfort more than a placebo, but only a dozen people were given the pill.
Hemp-derived CBD oil products will not get you “high” since they contain little or no THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. They are also now federally legal in the United States following the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill. Of course more medical research studies are needed, but it’s expected that these products will continue to gain even more mainstream acceptance in the plant-based wellness communities.
In a 2011 study, scientists wanted to study the effects of CBD on people with SAD. The scientists selected 24 people with this condition who had never received treatment for SAD then divided participants into two groups. One group received 600 mg of CBD while the control group received a placebo. The scientists then asked study participants to take part in a simulated public speaking test while researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate and other measurements of physiological and psychological stress.
Some people find the taste of hemp extract unpleasant, which may mean they should try a CBD isolate (or another method of taking CBD such as CBD capsules or gummies). The lack of flavor might also make isolate a better choice for cooking with CBD or mixing into some CBD cocktails. The important thing is that you have to be SUPER careful when selecting CBD oils. Since the cannabis industry is not FDA-regulated, there have been dozens and dozens of companies trying to get away with selling very low quality (and even potentially toxic), “snake oils” that have been extracted using harsh chemical solvents like butane and hexane. Make sure you stay away from cheap products like these, as they could damage your health.

2. Exercise-Getting your body moving is what the doctor recommends for several reasons. Our bodies thrive and naturally work better when active. How do you get started if exercise is just not your thing? Starting small is a good way to incorporate exercise into your routine. Walking is a perfect way to start small. Team up with a friend for an after-work walk around the neighborhood. Eventually, you can increase the duration. Invest in a pedometer to monitor your steps and to motivate you to do more. Better yet, take your dog with you. He will happily remind you of your walking date every day. Soon you’ll find you feel better, look forward to walking and actually crave the activity.
3. Reduce Stress-This step is usually easier said than done. Reducing stress is a key element of our overall wellness. Stress affects many parts of our bodies and minds in a negative way. Some everyday ways to reduce stress is to take a moment to breathe deeply, relax your muscles from head to toe, take up yoga or tai chi, meditate or even splurge on a massage. Find what works best for you. At work get organized, declutter your desk, make lists of what you must accomplish and learn to say “no” sometimes. Your overall wellness will thank you.
My Wife had Polio at age 5 and the lingering damage to the L leg and muscle drove her crazy. At age 21 she was using heavy doses of muscle relaxers and pain meds. Needed to bomb herself at night to get some sleep. A Post polio group in West Palm Beach told her about Marijuana and she got some from the Jamaican health aide that was her constant helper. After 5 months she quit all meds. All of them. Slowly came out of the drugged state the meds had caused from 15 years of use. We separated good friends and I know she has gone back to school and getting a degree. All from the help of a plant from Jamaica. I never understood the statement this plant has no viable medical value. Something smells in the politics of this prohibition. Shame.
